Sirens and Streetlights

SILENCE AND STREETLIGHTS
© Jim Molinelli

[intro]
“Pour me one more, Frank,
That’s a nice red ale.
God, I love the nighttime…
Can you hear that siren wail?”

[Verse 1]
It’s such a different town without the daylight
Quieter and softer when it’s lit by the moon
It never seems harsh and surely not as bright
As it appears on a Tuesday afternoon.

[CHORUS]
Silence and streetlights welcome the night
Neon and moonlight provide the light
With schools and shops all closed up tight
Lights and reflections define the night

[Verse 2]
Nighttime erases the bright colors of day
Bright clothes, cars, and trees become unseen
The darkness separates the light still in play,
Then reflects and distorts what we see.

[Verse 3]
A streetlight catches hold of your shadow,
then stretches it way down the street
Headlights rake across a shop window
Then they fade away in just a heartbeat.

[CHORUS]
Silence and streetlights welcome the night
Neon and moonlight provide the light
With schools and shops closed up tight
Lights and reflections define the night

[Verse 4]
Neon signs spray rainbows of colors
Upon sidewalks, storefronts, and cars.
The streetsweeper cleans the gutters
Clean wet pavement sparkles like the stars

[Outtro]
“Well… so long Frank. I’ll see ya 'gain soon”.
He boards the bus, sit’n in the light.
The bus pulls away, hummin’ its tune…
And the block of light fades into the night...
