I Wasn't Looking For This

Retirement was supposed to mean golf, quiet days, and leaving the creative life behind. Then a random thought turned into a song—and the old creative engine found a brand-new place to run.
A rockabilly-fueled look at discovering that some things never really retire.

Lyrics

I WASN'T LOOKING FOR THIS
© Jim Molinelli

[Verse 1]
I turned it all off and I shut it all down
No more phone calls, no more clients come ‘round
Put the pencils and papers and tools away
Got my golf clubs ready for the sunny days.
Thirty years as an architect doin’ designs
I’ve retired now, I’ve put it all behind.

[riff]

[Verse 2]
A random thought, a catchy new phrase,
Got stuck in my mind for several days,
The very next day another thought came
And as time went on, more of the same,
Next thing I knew there's a song in my head!
Gotta write it down, so I jump out of bed.

[Chorus]
I didn't go searching for something to do,
Planned on golf when architecture was through
I packed up the old job and put it away,
But the music arrived, and decided to stay.
No additions and kitchens filling my brain,
Now it's verses, choruses, even refrains.
That familiar feeling I could never dismiss.
Lord knows… I wasn't looking for this.

[riff]

[Verse 3]
Now I plan my songs using bars and keys
I traded CAD drawings for vocals and beats.
Been retired a while now, floodgates still wide
Got a stack of new songs I’m building in stride
The golf clubs still wait there, out in the hall
It turns out I answered a different call!

[solo]

[Bridge]
The tools may have changed, but the work feels the same
Building songs with words, and not houses with cranes
Traded windows and walls for rhythm and rhyme,
The same creativity was here the whole time.

[Chorus]
I didn't go searching for something to do,
Planned on golf when architecture was through
I packed up the old job and put it away,
But the music arrived, and decided to stay.
No additions and kitchens filling my brain,
Now it's verses, choruses, even refrains.
That familiar feeling I could never dismiss.
Lord knows… I wasn't looking for this…

Damn straight… I wasn’t looking for this!
