The Game Goes On

The Game Goes On
©Jim Molinelli

[Verse 1]
Fans rise as the Anthem rings,
Patriotic ones will sing.
Some stand still, some salute.
PLAY BALL! – the yell is resolute.
The boys of summer take the field.
His shirt and cap his team reveal,
Dad holds a scorecard, he his mitt.
Behind third base is where they sit...
Each year different, each one the same,
Always ours this grand old Game.

[Chorus]
This field, this game, it’s meant to last
It anchors us into its past.
In every game one team prevails,
Baseball is life! ...the rest details.
...And THE GAME goes on.

[Verse 2]
The pitcher waits atop the mound,
Uses his cleat to sculpt the ground.
Receives the sign and lets one fly,
The batter opts to let it by.
A dinger finally clears the bases,
Relief shows on home team faces.
Innings come, and innings go,
When runs are scored noise ebbs and flows...
Each game different, each one the same,
always ours this grand old Game.

[Chorus]
This field, this game, it’s meant to last
It anchors us into its past.
In every game one team prevails,
Baseball is life! ...the rest details.
...And THE GAME goes on.

[Verse 3]
The smell of grass, the sun above
This is the game we grew to love
Day game, night game, we don’t care
If it’s our team, then we’ll be there.
Always fresh and always old,
This game of ours is good as gold
Some things new, most stay the same
All in all it’s still “our game”.
Each era different, each one the same,
always ours this grand old Game.

[Bridge]
Fans and players come and go.
With passing years it’s always so.
It’ll outlive you and outlive me...
The grandest game you’ll ever see.

[Verse 4]
Chalk lines lie between fairs and fouls,
Close plays at home still bring great howls.
90 feet from base to base.
Every fielder has his place.
3 outs per team in every inning.
Just like in the game’s beginning.
The same number of outs as games of yore.
But always different final scores.
Each one different, each one the same,
Always ours this grand old Game.

[Chorus]
This field, this game, it’s meant to last
It anchors us into its past.
In every game one team prevails,
Baseball is life! ...the rest details.
...And THE GAME goes on.
